ROTARY IN ACTION: EMRC SERVICE PROJECTS FOR FEBRUARY
Rotary in Action -The February Community Service Project will take a two-pronged approach:

  1. We’ll help the non-profit Matter by packing meals that will be distributed to community members in need.  EMRC member Jeremy Newhouse directs international operations for Matter and is thrilled that we’ll be able to support Matter’s local work.

  2. Second, we’ll put together care/thank you gift baskets for local hospital workers who are directly supporting patients with COVID-19.
We have space for 12 people in each shift.

TWO DAYS, FOUR SHIFTS at MATTER:
Wednesday, February 10, Noon to 1:00, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
Thursday, February 11, 4:00 to 5:00, 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Can't volunteer? You can shop online and donate items (including gift cards) for the gift baskets. You can also make a monetary donation to this project. And you can write Thank You cards. Shop online with this link to Target.
Click here to go to the Target website and purchase donations. Instructions for delivery or drop off are on the Target page.

When ordering, choose delivery to Afira's house. Or, drop off your donated items at Afira's house  by February 3 at 6820 Cheyenne Circle in Edina.

Both projects will be done at the MATTER facility in St. Louis Park in a socially-distanced manner. (Location information is in the Sign Up link.) There are multiple ways you can assist with the project. Help with the purchasing of products to go into the gift baskets, writing thank you notes that will be included in the baskets, helping to pack meals and arrange baskets, delivering gift basket items to MATTER, delivering baskets to the hospitals, donating money.  With so many ways to participate, there’s really no excuse for us not to achieve 100% participation!

LAKE STREET COUNCIL PROJECT UPDATE
Edina Morningside Rotary Club is among several area Rotary clubs that will work with the Excelsior Morning Rotary Club on the Lake Street Council Project, to help rebuild businesses damaged in summer 2020’s civil unrest after George Floyd’s death.

We look forward to getting to know Lake Street business owners and working with them. Watch for more information about how to get involved. Many shops are open, including Midtown Global Market and Mercado Central. Consider shopping Lake Street for your groceries and gifts.

    OUR NEXT SPEAKER
    Tuesday, January 26, 2021
Chip Rankin, Minniwaska Schools Superintendent, MN National Guard

Nearly 700 soldiers from the Minnesota National Guard are getting ready to deploy to Africa. The soldiers from the Mankato-based 2nd Battalion, 135th Infantry, start reporting to Camp Ripley June 1.Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Chip Rankin said this deployment is particularly challenging, given all the uncertainties the soldiers' families face here at home because of the pandemic."Yeah, it's been a lot of juggling," Rankin said.

Rankin has many duties here in Minnesota. He's not only a National Guard commander, but he is also the superintendent of Minnewaska Area Schools and a father of four.

"You know, time keeps ticking and so you're constantly having to prioritize what you're not going to be able to do because there just won't be enough time," Rankin said.

Rankin said his battalion will be on a peacekeeping mission in Djibouti as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. "I think a lot of people in America forget that we have soldiers and service members deployed across the world all the time," Rankin said.

As he prepares to be gone for the next year, he is trying to spend quality time with his wife and kids, while also wrapping up the school year for 1400 students in his district who have been dealing with the challenges of distance learning.

Rankin has deployed two other times to Iraq and Afghanistan. He noted it is always a sacrifice but said he is so proud of the soldiers who will be serving alongside him in Africa. "They're from your hometown. They're from your neighborhood," Rankin said. "They come from every walk of life and they're going to do their very best to make this world a better place." In lieu of deployment ceremonies at all unit Armories due to social distancing requirements, the battalion will have a private departure ceremony at Camp Ripley on June 19. They deploy to Africa in July.
