Rotary International Site Review Team to Visit Minneapolis as Potential Host of the 2029 Convention
Excitement is building as Districts 5580, 5950, 5960 and 6250 welcome the Rotary International Site Review Team for a three-day visit, marking the final consideration of Minneapolis as a potential host for the 2029 Rotary International Convention.
The Rotary International Site Review Team will be welcomed with open arms at the Evening Fellowship Reception on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at the Nicollet Island Pavilion. This historic Mississippi riverfront venue offers unparalleled views of Minneapolis' iconic bridges and skyline. The reception, sponsored by Minneapolis Rotary #9, Edina Rotary Club, Edina Morningside Rotary, Rotary Districts 5950, 5960, 5580, 6250, and Meet Minneapolis, promises an evening of mingling with international, state, and local dignitaries, accompanied by live music from renowned musician "St. Paul" Peterson, President-Elect of the Rotary Club of Edina. This event is open to the public, with free parking available. Admission is $25 per person and includes heavy hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar. Registration link
On Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Edina Country Club, we will be forming receiving line outside of Edina Country Club to wave-in the mini coaches of Rotary VIPs to the Edina Country Club, from 50th Street to the clubhouse on Wooddale Avenue. The lunch and program starts at 11:30 a.m., adjourning promptly at 12:30 p.m. VIP speakers, including Marilyn Carlson Nelson, Co-Owner and Former CEO of Carlson will entertain all in attendance. The Edina Morningside Rotary Club (EMRC) is committed to executing on regular basis (at least quarterly) service projects which positively impact members of our local community. Recent projects have benefited individuals in hospice or memory care, those in need of food security, at-promise youth, and unhoused individuals.
In August and early September, the Club completed two projects in support of early education and development. The first was in support of Edina’s Early Learning Center (ELC) which is part of the Edina Public School System, The ELC provides multiple educational resources for both participating students and the students’ parents. EMRC and the ELC partnered to purchase art supplies, language development games, personal toiletries, and snacks and packed them in “welcome package” lunch boxes. The Early Learning Center was opened in 2017 and provides access to all school district resources including Early Childhood Screening, Early Childhood Special Education, Preschool for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds and Early Childhood Family Education.
The Club’s second project was collecting children’s’ books and donating them to the Minnesota chapter of Reach Out and Read. The non-profit partners with pediatric health care providers to educate parents of infants.

We are incredibly saddened by the news that former EMRC member Annie Kennedy has died. Tragically, she was killed in a car accident in Columbus, Ohio, where she had been living since the death of Patrick, her husband, in 2015.
Annie grew up in Olney, Illinios, attended Bethel University and was active in music and creative arts. Annie spent much of her career in the incentive business, developing programs and promotional products. Think embroidered shirts and jackets, printed coasters and cup holders, and more. Together with Patrick, Annie loved the game of golf and was a long-time member of Mendakota Golf Club in Mendota Heights.
Annie Borah Kennedy joined Edina Morningside Rotary in November of 1995. Her sponsor was her husband Patrick, who was a club charter member. Annie served as club president during the 2004-05 Rotary year and she attended the 2005 Rotary International Convention in Chicago, the Centennial Anniverary of Rotary. Annie served as Club Administrator, and she and Pat served Rotary District 5950 as trainers, providing entertaining and fun projects to promote the growth of Rotary in our district. Edina Morningside Rotary Club hosts the annual Pat Kennedy Golf Classic, recognizing the love both Patrick and Annie had for the game of golf, and for Rotary.
Annie touched many hearts. Annie loved her beautiful Arizona home which she built with Pat and shared with friends on occasion.
Annie had fun! She cherished her friends in Rotary and in the community, and her passion was fabric arts including rug hooking together with her twin sister Jane. We will miss you Annie! We will carry your spirit in our hearts.
I am looking for a few volunteers to assist with the sales and distribution of hats and mittens this year. Again we are looking to work with the Rotaract Club of Edina, so we will have some youth on the committee for the "heavy lifting." I am anticipating either October 14th or October 21st as the distribution date and am awaiting a confirmation from our supplier that he will have sufficient stock to supply a record number of hats and gloves this year.
As you consider the request to join the committee, I'd also request that you think of groups outside of Rotary that may be interested in participating with the purchasing of hats & gloves for distributing to their organizations (think local religious organizations, corporations, other non-profits, book clubs, yoga classes ... ok you get the idea). I am sure you are aware of the devastating news regarding the recent fire hurricane on Maui. The Maui fires are the most devastating destruction in our state since Hawaii joined the US in 1959. As of this morning, 93 deaths have been reported and there are likely to be many more. So painful to think about!
There are 53 Rotary clubs in Hawaii and 8 of them are on the island of Maui. Our District has set up a special fund to benefit Maui Fire Victims. All funds are being channeled through the Rotary District 5000 Foundation. A committee has been organized to determine the greatest needs for the distribution of monies in Maui. These funds will be used over the next year for the recovery and rebuilding phase of Maui which will take many, many years.

The REALTORS® Association of Maui is also working to connect people with homes on Maui with people who were displaced by the fires. Please reach out to anyone you may know with space over on Maui.
