John R. Freeman is Frenzel Professor of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota he taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Freeman is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a recipient of the all- university awards for both undergraduate and graduate student teaching.  He has been a consultant to the National Science Foundation, a branch of our armed services, and several law firms. Political economy and application of time series statistics in the study of politics have been his primary areas of research. A number of his projects have been supported by the National Science Foundation and by the Bank Austria Foundation. Currently, Freeman is using spatial statistics to evaluate the validity of human and machine geo-coded reports of subnational political violence in countries in Latin America and the Middle East.
