Mark you calendars for a mixer in 2018!
Thursday, January 18th 5-7pm - Edina Country Club
Appetizers served.  Please note the cash bar is cash only (no credit cards or checks).
The Rotary Club of Edina, the Edina Morningside Rotary Club and the Edina Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a joint prospective member event. The event is part of quarterly get-togethers sponsored by both Rotary clubs and the Chamber and will be a fun evening of community connection. All Rotarians and Chamber members should bring a guest to the gathering. Guests will learn more about these great local organizations, and have a chance to network with membership.
Non-members are cordially welcome to attend and see if Rotary or Chamber membership is for you. There are no hard sells or formal pitches--just a chance to meet great people in our community.
Sign up to attend through the Edina Chamber of Commerce registration page here

On December 21, 2017, the Rotary Club of Edina Morningside Board of Directors approved Annie Kennedy and Heather Haen Anderson for Honorary Membership.  Honorary Membership is defined as "Persons who have distinguished themselves by meritorious service in furtherance of Rotary ideals."
Annie Kennedy - Past President and Club Administrator for the Rotary Club of Edina Morningside for 13 years, in addition to serving on various committees.  Together with her husband, Pat, the Kennedys organized over 20 years of EMRC Golf Tournaments.   In recognition of Pat's service to the club and generous memorial funding, the event has been named The Patrick D. Kennedy Memorial Golf Tournament in his honor.   This event continues to be the main fundraiser for the Edina Morningside Rotary Club Foundation each year.
Heather Haen Anderson - Past President of the Rotary Club of Edina Morningside.  Heather was the co-sponsor of our 20th Anniversary Hanger Dance.   She continued to serve in the club officer executive rotation for several years, despite increasing health issues.   Following the completion of her presidential year in 2016, Heather has been unable to attend club meetings due to her health and pain. In spite of this, she remains very connected to Rotary and interested in Rotary accomplishments.
An appropriate "Honorary Members" recognition page will be added to our website in the coming weeks.

Excerpt from correspondence from Holly Caboti-Jones (Outbound Youth Exchange Student studying in Brazil):
Right now I’ve been in Brazil for a month and a half but it feels like I’ve been living here my whole life! In such a short time I have changed so much and done things I couldn’t even imagine before coming here.
My family is so kind to me and I truly feel at home with them. I also really love my school and class mates who definitely are to thank for helping me reach fluency in Portuguese! I am the only exchange student and gringo in my city so English speakers are hard to come by, but on the bright side I feel like I’m having a true immersion into Brazil.
My day to day life is very active and I rarely stop unless it’s for napping after lunch time- something typical and much needed after 6 to 10 (depending on the day) rigorous hours of school. I participate in Rotary every Wednesday and Interact every Friday, volunteer at an English school called FISK, and play tennis twice a week. I also have really fallen in love with walking, especially since this town is so small everything is starting to become more familiar as time goes on.
The people I have met here are some of the kindest and most patient humans I have ever met. Whenever I don’t understand a word they go out of their way to find other words around it to make sure I know, they are always teaching me new expressions and phrases.
Even though Mato Grosso is one of the less known about and less traveled to districts in Brazil, I would definitely consider it a diamond in the rough. Even though our roads are awful and our WIFI is so bad I can barely send emails, Mato Grosso has some of the most beautiful nature I’ve ever seen in my life. Just two weeks ago, I went to the Pantanal and all it took was a 3-hour car ride. I’ve come within inches of alligators, pet monkeys and even fished a piranha during my time there- life has been wild.
EMRC Members - remember we have three exchanges students in Edina (Paco, Sam and Susmita).   Please consider bringing one of them along with your family on an outing or to an activity.   They are always looking for new things to experience in the USA, and in particular, if you have something this week they can join you for please consider that.   Contact Peter Kelley for more information.

Attendance matters!  It keeps you connected, informed, and participating in service above self. Our club encourages you to "make up" missed meetings.  You can do that by attending the meetings of other clubs - locally or wherever you travel; you can participate on a committee - you get a makeup for planning meetings; you can gather for socials, service events, networking with other Rotarians.
How do you get credit?  Simply send/give your makeups (date/event) to our Club Administrator, Mark Shockey:  before it is a blur.

EMRC members, their families and guests, attended a fantastic holiday party on Tuesday, December 19th at the Edina Country Club.   We enjoyed a spectacular performance by the Edina Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. David Henderson.   There was also a special guest appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus!  Thanks to Bob Laue and his planning team!  We also held an informal holiday event (arranged by our social chairs) Friday afternoon at Bunny's.   Thanks to Steve May, Steve Lyon and Paul Nelson!

Our condolences are extended to Paula Schwartz and her family for the passing of her father.  Dr. Paul Newell Youngdale passed away Dec. 16, at the grand age of 89.

He was a very kind man who believed in academic excellence and service to others. Born to Paul and Dorothy Youngdale May 20, 1928, in Elkader, Iowa, Paul served in the U.S. Army between World War II and the Korean War and later graduated from Pacific University with a degree in optometry.

Paul began his practice in Beaver Dam in 1953 and served the community faithfully until his retirement in 1994. He lent his leadership to many organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America, Kiwanis, the Freemasons, the YMCA, Grace Presbyterian Church, and the National Board of Examiners of Optometry. A hardworking man who loved gardening, the outdoors and all that is Wisconsin (Go Pack!), he left behind a legacy of excellence. His family was with him toward the end, and we rest in the knowledge that he is now home in a new body in the glorious presence of our savior.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Dorothy; sisters, Nancy Padfield and Pat Goplen; his wife, Marian Youngdale and his wife, Shirley Youngdale.

He is loved by his sons, Eric Paul of Newark, Delaware, and David Jon of San Antonio, Texas; and daughters, Paula Lynn Schwartz of Mendota Heights, Minnesota, and Bobbie Sue Schwartz and Erin Braun of Beaver Dam.

A private ceremony will be held by family at a future date.  Koepsell-Murray Funeral Home in Beaver Dam is serving the family. Online condolences may be made at
